Cleaning Hardwood Floors
Solid hardwood floors are among the easiest
to keep clean. It is important, however, to know a bit about
your hardwood floors before you begin to clean them. What
type of wood is it? What type of finish does your floor
have? Check with a professional installer for any additional
questions you may have.
Wood floors are very susceptible to dents
and scratches. Dirt and grit are partial causes for such
damages. To avoid causing scratches and dulling of the finish,
place door mats on your floors to collect dirt and sand.
Also, avoid dragging furniture across wood floors. Try using
felt contacts for furniture legs.
Make sure to wipe up all spills on hardwood
floors. Standing water can warp the wood and damage the
finish. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth to wipe up spills.
Also, it is recommended that you use neutral pH cleaner
made especially for wood floors, because other oily soaps
can damage the finish.
For general clean up, use a broom, vacuum
with a brush attachment or a dust mop. Never use a wet mop
on wood floors. The water will damage the finish. When using
a dust mop, make sure to purchase special dust mop treatment
for wood floors.
In addition to water and dent damage, the
sun can also deteriorate wood floors. Direct sunlight can
discolor hardwood. It is recommended to close curtains or
use sheer drapes to protect against UV rays.
